BioBackground info:
Yamazaki Sagaru, a member of the elite Edo police force Shinsengumi. He acts as a spy for the group, gathering intelligence of any kind. Whenever a dark rumor about a certain organization comes up, it is his duty to gather as much information as he can about them, using whatever means necessary whether by sneaking into the base itself or by infiltrating while in disguise. Though most of the missions he is given usually puts him in a very dangerous position in the end, he remains faithful to his superior’s orders and usually does his job properly (as long as his life is not depended on it).
In truth, Yamazaki is a very plain character with ordinary looks and no redeeming personality traits besides his undying love for Badminton (and recently Kabaddi in the manga). To make up for this, he sometimes acts as a "tsukkomi" or straight man character to this off-the-wall police force and has a bit of a "do-what-I-say-or-I’ll-beat-you-up" relationship with his vice commander Hijikata Toushirou. He is also quick-witted and a bit sarcastic, even when answering back to his superiors. However he truly cares for the people around him and can be very honest with his answer when seeing his acquaintances in a troubled situation.
Though Yamazaki clearly has a knack for pissing off Hijikata, he does in fact look up to him in an odd sort of way. He also respects the head of the Yorozuya, Sakata Gintoki, to a certain extent and currently has somewhat of a mutual understanding relationship with the so-called diciple there Shimura Shinpachi, due to the both of them having to deal with strange people all the time.
While he was being chased after Hijikata for goofing off on the job again, a black hole swallows him up and plops him on the island.
